What Parents Need To Know About Mentoring

I have often heard young people say, “I don’t talk to my mom about this or I wouldn’t dare tell my dad that!” But if teens don’t feel comfortable with talking to their parents about certain matters, who are they talking to? Speaking openly and honestly about certain matters can be challenging. And depending on what the topic is, it can also feel uncomfortable.

Mentoring can serve as a resourceful tool for parents by helping them identify a neutral, yet trustworthy adult who can provide additional support for their teen. For example, when teenagers are trying to cope with certain family matters. They may need to talk, but prefer not to their parent because of the direct connection to the matter. Having a mentor would give teens another option to address matters and receive practical steps to consider.

There are times when it’s necessary and much needed that teens have a safe place to talk and express thoughts that goes beyond family–including parents.

According to research, young people involved in mentoring tend to behave better, improve their grades, increase confidence & coping skills, and ultimately guide them in the right direction.

Mentoring benefits young people in a number of ways.
