What Teens Need To Know About Self Awareness

Earlier today, I had a conversation with one of my students. And as always, I asked how’s everything going at home and about the new job he recently started. He paused  and proceeded to tell me that he had been fired, but that he was okay and would just find another job because he wasn’t making much and does not tolerate disrespectful customers. However, by the expression on his face and the tone in his voice, I heard something else. The truth is, he wasn’t okay and there was some regret.

I expressed to him that even though his feelings are valid, what did he learn about himself in this experience? He responded, “That I need to work on my attitude”. You see, this is the start of self-awareness. Getting an understanding of yourself. In this case, it’s important for him to get this lesson now and work on improving; rather than later, and it cost him more.

Teens need to develop more self awareness. Practicing self awareness can help teens improve self-acceptance, increase confidence, appreciate diversity, improve their thoughts and behaviors, manage stress, and so much more.

Three ways teens can practice self awareness daily is by taking a few minutes each night and asking themselves the following questions:

1. What went good today?

2. What didn’t go so well today?

3. How can I be better tomorrow?

Hope this help! Ready. Set. Grow.
