What Teens Need To Know About Self Care

Why are so many teens seem  to be more stressed and overwhelmed than ever?

What I’ve discovered is that teens are no longer just going to school and doing chores. Many of them are taking on jobs, post secondary classes, leadership roles, and more! High schoolers are more busier today than teens in the past and have no idea how to properly balance it all and still take care of themselves too!

They need to know that self-care isn’t about getting the latest shoes, a mani/pedi, or just materialistic stuff. Self-care can also be having time alone, getting proper rest, prioritizing your schedule, expressing when you are not ok/need a mental break, and more. They need to know neglecting personal needs can increase anxiety, anger, fatigue, and even lead to depression.

It’s so important that teens learn self-care practices early and how to incorporate it into their daily life because one day they will be adults with a lot more responsibilities.

So here’s 3 simple ways teens can begin to practice self-care.

  1. Identify people they like, trust, and respect. This allows teens to identify people they can possibly express their thoughts to and talk about matters that are important to them such as their academics, goals, or just a general conversation.
  2. Create a calendar. This allows teens to manage different areas of their life and plan accordingly. Calendars helps with keeping daily tasks/responsibilities under control and not it controlling you.
  3. Set time for “ME” time. This allows teens to relax some time. This can be time outside playing basketball, watching a specific show, playing video games…Anything that brings a peace of mind and gives their brain a break each day.

                  Ready. Set. Grow.
